Lunar Paint documentation

Create, refine, and export with confidence.

A practical guide to the workspace, editable projects, painting tools, selections, Batch Export, file formats, recovery, and local-first privacy.

Start here

Getting started

Create a new canvas from a preset or custom dimensions, or open an existing image. Save ongoing work as a .lunar project before exporting a flattened delivery copy.

1

Open or create

Choose a source image or set the canvas size, background, and resolution for a new document.

2

Keep it editable

Save a Lunar Paint Project so layers, groups, masks, adjustments, blend modes, and locks remain available.

3

Export a copy

Create PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another supported delivery format without replacing the editable project.

The studio

Workspace

The creative shelf keeps drawing, selection, movement, and navigation tools close to the canvas. Tool-specific options appear for the active tool, while Layer Stack and Color Lab keep structure and color accessible.

  • Command Center searches tools and actions from one keyboard-driven panel.
  • Canvas Focus clears studio panels when the artwork needs more room.
  • Interface sizing offers Compact, Standard, and Large workspace densities.

Preserve the work

Editable projects

A .lunar project preserves the canvas and resolution along with paint layers, groups, masks, live adjustments, visibility, opacity, blend modes, editing locks, transparency locks, and color-space metadata.

Create and refine

Painting and selections

Begin with Studio Round, Soft Airbrush, Ink Pen, Marker, Sketch, or Pixel Detail. Adjust the tip, spacing, angle, width, hardness, opacity, and smoothing, or import an image as a custom brush tip.

Selections can be feathered, expanded, contracted, smoothed, moved, filled, or used as masks. Crop Assistant prepares centered standard compositions and can leave the result as a repositionable selection before cropping.

Deliver in sets

Batch Export

Batch Export creates several resized copies from the complete visible canvas in one pass. Open the Batch Export group from the File menu, choose an output family and preset, select a destination folder, then export the enabled sizes.

Social & Profile

Ten square outputs from 2048×2048 down to 64×64 for posts, profiles, product cards, thumbnails, and web use.

Presentation & Video

Widescreen copies from 4K through common presentation, cover, banner, and web-publishing sizes.

Apple App Icons

An Xcode-ready iPhone and iPad AppIcon set with the matching Contents.json catalog.

Android App Icons

Adaptive foreground and background layers, legacy square and circular icons, and API 26 resources.

Customize a repeatable preset

  1. Open Options from the Batch Export dialog.
  2. Select only the sizes needed, or add a custom width and height.
  3. Choose PNG or JPEG and set an optional subfolder and file name.
  4. Create or rename a preset for recurring work.
  5. Export all presets to JSON when you want a portable backup.

Files and delivery

Formats

Lunar Paint works with PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TGA, AVIF, HEIC, DDS, TIFF, flattened PSD, ICO, PDF, SVG, and editable .lunar projects. Advanced-format availability can depend on platform codecs or bundled conversion support.

PSD interoperability is flattened: keep the original PSD when its source layers matter, and use a .lunar project for continuing editable work in Lunar Paint.

Local by design

Recovery and privacy

When recovery is enabled, Lunar Paint periodically writes local recovery copies for changed documents. The startup recovery browser lets you recover or explicitly discard them. A successful save removes the corresponding recovery copy.

The application does not require a Lunar Paint cloud account and does not send artwork, filenames, editing activity, usage analytics, or telemetry to Lunar Paint.
